Chapter Eight

I take a sip of my tea and lean back in my chair, then set it back down with a sigh.

"Is everything all right?" Gerda asks.

"I'm just finding it hard to concentrate," I admit.

"Still thinking about your lunch with your officer yesterday?"

A furious blush spreads across my cheeks. "I can't help it," I mutter.

"Then you're not going to be able to help it even more in a moment," she teases, nodding in the direction of the door.

I look up in time to see Lewis striding towards our table with a small bouquet of flowers in his hands. I'm not sure where he got them from, but they're beautiful.

"I was hoping I'd find you here," he says once he gets to us. "These are for you," he says, handing them to me.

"Thank you." I can't believe he's done this, it's so sweet. "They'll look lovely in my room."

He beams at me. "May I sit?"

I'm about to say yes when Penelope sidles up to the table, apparently summoned by his presence. I try not to groan in frustration. He doesn't appear to be best pleased about her appearance either.

"Officer Lewis, it's good to see you again," she says, leaning in and placing a hand on his arm.

Jealousy rears up inside me, but I squish it down. It doesn't mean anything, especially when Lewis has just brought me a wonderful gift.

"Lady Penelope," he says, sounding as annoyed as I feel about the situation. It is a little reassuring that he's responding the same way.

"You promised to help me with my form for fencing..."

Frustration crosses through his eyes. I think. It's impossible to know for sure how he's feeling. It's foolish to think that he's reacting the same way as I am. Penelope is a stunning girl, even if she has some peculiar fashion choices in my eyes. And she's well connected too, something I don't think I can say of myself when my only friends are the children of two minor nobles.

"Yes, Lady Penelope."

"I'm free now, if you are," she purrs. "I've been looking forward to learning from someone as talented as you. And Officer James told me that you needed to prove you're able to teach people. He said he's free now to assess you."

I swear a small groan comes from him at that.

"So, we'll go?" Penelope asks. Her gaze flits to me and a cruel smile lifts at her lips. She knows what she's doing by interrupting the two of us, but she doesn't care one way or another that it could hurt me.

Lewis offers her a tight smile. "Yes, we can go."

I can tell he's only saying that because she's telling the truth about what he needs for his training, and that he doesn't want to disappoint the person who seems to be his superior officer.

Or maybe I'm reading too much into it and he wants to spend time with Penelope.

"I'll see you at dinner, Mati," he says, his voice softening as he says my name.

Except that I'm doubting that now too.
